Season Safety and Health Tips

Spring is finally here! And, our nation’s capital is a beautiful place to enjoy it. Winter was too long and we’re all itching to go explore. As we break out the shorts, roll down the windows, and wear sunglasses because it’s a beautifully sunny day out (not because we’re blinded by the snow); are we really ready for experiencing D.C. in all its glory?

Washington, D.C. is jammed packed with sights to see. You could spend days upon days taking in it all. Here are some points to consider as you discover this great city:

  1. What’s on your feet? However you choose to accessorize them, make sure you have adequate support. If you decide on wearing shoes without socks, sprinkle some powder inside. There are plenty of looks that are attractive and Athlete’s Foot isn’t one of them.

  2. Sunscreen. Sunscreen. Sunscreen. Yes, even if its cloudy out. “But Mommmmmmmm!” You’ll thank me later, kids. Not only does sunscreen protect against sunburns (I’d rather eat a lobster than look like one), and aid in the fight against skin cancer, it can reduce the signs of aging. Whichever sunscreen you use, remember to reapply. SPF is a variable indicator that only keeps you protected from harmful UV-rays for a period of time for you specifically. For example, if you burn without any protection in one minute (shout out to the redheads) and your sunscreen is SPF 50, this means that you should reapply after 50 minutes. Also, give a glance to whether or not you should reapply sooner if you are in water.

  3. Operation: Hydration. It’s easy to forget about this one while away. Who can blame you? All your senses are being awakened by your love for a new city. Wherever your days lead you, make sure to find time for those important water breaks. If you’re interested in learning about a few health benefits of drinking water, here are links to publications from the CDC and WebMD.

Now that you’re protected from the sun, the pavement, and dehydration; it’s time to have some fun!
