It Pays To Be Nice

Social media has given a lot of attention to those behaving badly. It’s everywhere. You cannot escape the frenzy. So isn’t it a breath of fresh air when you see someone being kind or watch a video clip that just makes you smile? Being nice still goes a long way.

Traveling can be frustrating. Traffic jams, long lines in the airport, waiting for a table at a popular eatery, the kids missed their naps, the kids consumed too much sugar, the kids had a meltdown, you forgot to shut the garage door…this list is endless. No matter how crazy the kids get or how crazy it is when some adults act like the kids, little pleasantries can go a long way. Here are a few examples:

  1. Airline staff. There are people who can give it and if you’re at an airport dealing with delays or canceled flights, chances are there’s an airline employee that’s getting it. We all realize that they know more than they sometimes let on. That in and of itself can be irritating. But, did you know that being kind to them can make your journey from the airport to your final destination that much smoother? Isn’t that what we all want when traveling? A non-taxing excursion?

  2. Front desk hotel staff. With any luck, your interaction with these employees is minimal. You walk into the hotel, check-in, and head to your room. A light-hearted and fun conversation between the you two can potentially hook you up with extra amenities, a better room, or some complimentary refreshments/snacks (I’m still waiting for the day of Cool Ranch Doritos on my pillow).

  3. Waitstaff. You’re going to find yourself at a restaurant or two when out of town with the kids. The experience is a crapshoot when you add children to the equation. Engaging with the waitstaff can get you recommendations for their best menu items or score you some complimentary appetizers or desserts. Free is a sweet song any parent likes to hear.

Taking time to be kind to others goes a long way. It can change the outcome of one’s day. While positivity and politeness can upgrade your traveling experience, these are also powerful messages to send to your children.
